Pond Dipping

10/04/10 Pond Dipping

I joined Rachel and Dr Ben Rushbrook at the Children’s Pond Dipping event.  Gathering around the pond, the children seemed as excited by the act of netting as they did by the Hog Louse and Damsel Fly larvae they caught. One cruel parent threatened to feed their catch of small creatures to his children. For me it was the water sounds pouring from the nets that captured my attention. Hydrophone recordings caught the slight noise of the nets figuring-eight in the water, and a strange electro-magnetic pulse, I’m not sure if this was interference, bubbles rising through the sediment, or a distress call emitted in Morse code by some fearful creature.
